Bats and Bat Bugs — When Bat Removal Goes Wrong

Bats … They're pesky, right? Let me tell you what is more annoying that bats, though; bat bugs. These critters often come hand in hand with the flying mammals that take up resident in your attic, but they're also the one part of the removal and cleanup job that is usually forgotten about. All nuisance wildlife will come with parasites, such as fleas, ticks, mites, etc. Bats come with all of those things, but they also come with bat bugs too. They're similar to bed bugs, even in looks, but they're not the same at all. Bat bugs can only feed on bats.

Will getting rid of bats get rid of bat bugs too?
Sadly, not. Bat bugs can actually live up to a year without a host being available, and they will even attempt to feed on other animals to try and stay alive too. The good new is that bat bugs will only last for a maximum timeframe of a year after the bats have been removed, but they will wreak havoc during that time. They will bite you, your family members, and your pets, in an attempt to find blood that sustains them, but the only blood that will is that of the bat, which is no longer around. With time, all bat bugs will die off, but we don't recommend that you hang around and wait for them all to die of natural causes. (A year is a very long time when you're getting bitten all the time. It's super cruel for your pets too.)

There are so many parts of bat removal that people don't take into consideration, and when a bat removal project goes wrong … Well, it really does go wrong. Legal concerns aside, biological material left behind is a surefire attractant for other animals, including other bats, and that's before you think about the various disease threats that not only bats come with, but also any material they come into contact with, and even the urine and fecal matter they scatter around too. The one guaranteed way to ensure that nothing goes wrong is to hire in a professional that will do the entire job properly. (And that means getting rid of the rarely thought-of bat bugs too!)
