4 Things to Consider When Cleaning Bat Droppings in the Attic
Bat droppings also referred to as bat guano can often be seen in the obscure and dark spaces of the house such as our attic. Their droppings may carry pathogens and bacteria that can lead to the transmission of the zoonotic diseases. In case you are planning to clean the dropping personally, there are some things that you need to consider that will guarantee that you will not contract any diseases.
Things to Think of When Cleaning Bat Guanos
Bat guano will not only pose threat to our health. It can also make your home appear unsanitary. A large accumulation of the bat dropping in our attic can lead to the collapse of our ceiling. If you are not confident in handling this, call the professionals who have cleaning and decontamination as a part of their service.
Safety
Safety is the first thing that you should consider when cleaning the bat guano. As aforementioned, bat dropping may be a host of different fungus and parasites that can cause histoplasmosis, leptospirosis, etc. Once the droppings have been disturbed, the fungal spores will be released into the air that we can accidentally breathe. Be sure to arm yourself with a face mask with a HEPA filter. There are also diseases that can affect human if it come in contact with an open wound or skin. Wear jeans and long sleeves that will cover your exposed skin. You should also wear gloves when cleaning the bat guano. Shoes with good traction is also recommended to avoid accidental slips.
Tools and Materials for Cleaning
You need to prepare the materials and tools that you will need for cleaning. We do not recommend the use of vacuum and broom since this can disperse the fungal spores to the air. You will need to manually pick the dropping and place them in the garbage bag. For the tough droppings, you will have to soften the stool by spraying it with water. You can then use a brush with a tough bristle to clean them. There are cleaning solutions that you can purchase in the market. They can disintegrate organic matters. However, if you are not sure if the product will be effective in decontaminating the space, you should try to use the mixture of bleach and water.
Stain Remover
Some stains will be stubborn, and it will be difficult to remove them. Try to apply baking soda directly on the stains and leave it for a couple of minutes. After a few minutes, clean the stain with a brush and observe if there are changes. You can also use vinegar as a replacement for baking soda. If this did not work, consider repainting the whole area.
Proper Disposal
Apart from the bat guano, you should also dispose the materials that have been contaminated with the droppings such as the insulation materials. Place them in a garbage bag, seal the bag before placing it in another garbage bag. You should also properly mark the garbage bag. Some states will have strict rules with regards to the disposal of the organic matter. Call your local wildlife agency to verify this information.
Knowing how to properly clean the bat droppings in your attic will not only eliminate the nauseating scent, it can also keep your place safe for the entire family.
