4 Valid Reasons Why You Shouldn't Relocate Bats
Bats are known for controlling the population of the harmful insects. Therefore, some people will even try to invite them on their property. However, there are instances when it will attempt to roost in our property. Once this happens, people will capture them and will relocate them to another place. Before you do this, understand that there are reasons why relocating the bats will not be effective in controlling the presence of this flying mammal.
Reasons Why It Is Not Advisable to Relocate Bats
There are different methods that you can use to control the presence of bats in your house. However, we do not recommend the relocation of bats due to a range of reasons. Let us discuss some of them.
1. Bats Will Simply Return
The bats are known for their good navigation skills. There are species of bats that will migrate hundreds of miles away from their current location and can return to the exact location by next year. This is due to their homing ability. Even on the off chance that you release them 10 miles away from your location, they can easily return especially if they have been well-established in your property.
2. You Can Introduce a New String of Pathogens
There are some states that prohibit the relocation of the bats. Based on the record, relocating can introduce a new string of virus or pathogens in the area. For instance, a virus that was originally found in Europe has almost wiped the population of some bat's species in the US.
3. It Can Reduce Their Survival Rate
Since you are introducing the bat in the unfamiliar place, it will be difficult for them to adapt and survive. Bats will need a secluded place to roost to remain safe from the attack of the predator. If you are releasing them in a new place, it will be difficult for them to find a new roosting place. It will also be challenging for them to find a new foraging ground. Bats will need to eat many insects per night. They need to build up their body fats to help them survive through the winter season.
4. Increase in Insect Population
Once you remove the bats in your property, you will experience a sudden increase of harmful insects in your property. One bat can eat at least 1000 mosquitoes per night. Mosquitoes are carrier of lethal diseases such as Dengue fever, Malaria, and Zika virus. If you live in an agricultural setting, they can control the population of locust, wasps, beetles, and other insects that destroy crops. Farmers are saving a large amount of money just by inviting the bats in their area.
Bats can deliver a range of benefits to human. They can increase the organic activities in the soil and manage the insects. Simple home modification to keep them out of our house would be the better solution. You should also introduce a bat house away from your house to give them an alternative roosting site.
