5 Things to Do If There Are Bats in Your Chimney
When bats are looking for an excellent roosting site, they will look for an enclosed and dark space that is free from their enemies and harsh weather condition. Originally, they can be found in the hollow of the trees and in caves. Today, since we are continuously invading the habitat of the wild creatures, they will choose to live close to us. They can usually be found in our chimneys. They can easily squeeze their body in a crack that is about 1/4in wide.
What to Do If You Have Bats in Your Chimney
Before you do something with the bats, you need to know if there are baby bats inside. The mother bats will usually take care of their babies every May or June. Depending on the species of bats, it will take around 3-6 weeks before the newborn bats can live on their own.
1. Check for the Opening
The first thing you should do is to go out of your house and look for any signs of openings especially on the structure close to your chimney. Observe the movement of the bats at sunset and notice if there are bats that are coming out of those holes. They will usually leave their nest at around 15 minutes after sunset.
2. Seal the Holes
You will have to go to your roof to seal all the possible entry points. You should only do this once the bats have already left the chimney. You should perform this at around November to guarantee that there will be no baby bats that will be trapped in your chimney. Use only the appropriate sealing materials. You should also consider placing a bat excluder.
3. Constructing Bat House
Constructing a bat house away from your property will give the bats a more accessible place to roost. Bat houses should already be erected around the month of May. This will enable the bats to be accustomed on the presence of this structure. Bats can help in reducing the presence of insect. Therefore, it might be beneficial to have them around your property.
4. Preventative Measures
After you have removed the bats in the chimney, you must make sure that this will never happen again. Aside from fixing the parts of your roof that have been compromised, consider purchasing a chimney cap. You should also conduct a periodic assessment of your structure.
5. Hiring the Professional
In case you cannot wait until the little bats are capable of surviving on their own, call the help of the bat removal experts. They will be handling everything from the analysis of your house, performing the best control solution, doing simple home modification, decontaminating your property, and disposal of the organic matters.
Avoid using repellent and chemical solution when driving away the bats in your chimney. Bats are known to have a high tolerance against strong odor. Chemical solutions on the other hand, will harm them, which is considered illegal.
